Following on the heels of last year's "Hollywood Songsters" ["RBB" Ap 15 91], Parish and Pitts introduce "The Great Hollywood Musical Picture", the latest in the "Great Picture" series. This book covers both the classics and newer musicals up to 1988. It is an "Annie" to "Ziegfield" compilation of about 340 musical films The essays range in length from two to more than three pages, depending on the importance of the film. Entries open with year, studio, and running time, followed by a comprehensive list of the behind-the-scenes staff, songs with performers, and cast list. The essays give the story line, any interesting history surrounding the film, and brief criticism. The book includes live-action and animated musicals, but a few are missing. For example, the animated "An American Tale" (1986) is omitted. The text is accompanied by 112 black-and-white photographs The authors' enthusiasm for musicals is evident, but they are critical of poor films and cite opinions from other sources about the films. For example, several sources are cited for "Night and Day", including "The Melody Lingers On" by Roy Hemming and "Commonweal". However, complete citations are not given in the text, and the book lacks a bibliography The book closes with a chronology of the movies included. An index by personal name or song would have been useful While the era of the musical has faded because of high production costs, this popular treatment will be welcome at libraries with musical fans, especially with cable movie channels reviving interest in the genre. The lengthy essays and comprehensive lists of credits will be helpful if the reader knows the name of the musical. Libraries owning works like the "Motion Picture Guide and "Encyclopedia of the Musical Film by Stanley Green may not need a book with entries on this scale.
