Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 7-9-- This biography depicts Nixon as the dark villain of modern American politics. Nadel opens with an account of her own sense of foreboding at his 1972 election, and then continues with a predictable account of his life, crediting him with poor motives and even worse actions. This has been a common theme in many biographies of Nixon, but an emphasis on his character flaws often precludes any real discussion of the ideas and issues that so divided the U. S. during the many years he was a national figure. There is certainly little discussion of those issues in this book, and there is also a shortage of background information. Events are rarely put into historical context. Nadel occasionally digresses into side issues, such as a long account of the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, which add nothing to the story. She does cite many sources for her information, but tends to quote some of them out of context and misconstrue the analysis they present, especially her main source, Ambrose's very good, two-volume adult biography about Nixon (S. & S., 1988, 1989). While it is impossible to defend many of Nixon's actions, it is possible to write a balanced, informative look at his life. This book fails to do that, and as a result is not appropriate for general use by young readers. Larsen's Richard Nixon: Rise and Fall of a President (Watts, 1991) is a far better choice. --Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO

    A Perfect Book

This is truly the best nixon book ever written! I read it in 5th grade (i have always been political minded and even then i knew what i was talking about) and read it again in 7th. If you really want to know about this great president, nadle's book is an excellent read!
