This album of the greatest film music of Dimitri Tiomkin will serve as an excellent introduction, and even listeners who are unfamiliar with the composer's name will recognize some of the films he wrote for, including The Alamo, The Old Man and the Sea, Giant, High Noon, Dial M for Murder, and Strangers on a Train. Of course, appreciating these movie themes outside the context of their films requires a little imagination, though listeners who can take the music on its own terms will find many attractive melodies and much evocative scene painting in Tiomkin's music. Richard Kaufman leads the orchestra in this SACD on the LSO Live label, and his intelligent interpretations do justice to the selections, remaining true to the originals as much as possible. The LSO sounds marvelous in the multichannel recordings, and the spacious depth and brilliant tone colors of the orchestra come across fully in this audiophile presentation.
