Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
With madcap illustrations that take cues from cartoons like CatDog (which Hannan created) and SpongeBob SquarePants, wide-mouthed Charles Chinchilla and his friends, Elvis Wormly and Babs McBoid, decide to build the "Greatest Snowman in the World." Despite Charles's exuberance, their first attempt looks like a lumpy, hairy, dirty blob ("The worst snowman in the world" is Babs's pronouncement). Adding a smorgasbord of found objects--including hockey sticks, a garden hose (for a nose), and half a dozen eyes made from assorted bottles and balls--turns their creation into a snowman as ludicrous as he is spectacular (though still prone to melting). Given the unhinged energy present from the get-go, readers are likely to be let down by a flat non sequitur ending. Ages 4–8. (Nov.)
Children's Literature
Building a snowman turns into a big production for rambunctious Charles Chinchilla and his helpful friends, Elvis Wormly and Babs McBoid. They bounce, they shout, and they get themselves "rolling" when they see all the snow on the ground. They make a huge snowman, but he is not fancy enough, so Charles, who seems to have all the ideas, decides that they will collect all sorts of odd paraphernalia to decorate the snowman. They find baseball bats, trashcan lids, bones, shoes, and more of most anything. A double-page vertical illustration of the snowman is shown as Charles and his friends declare him to be the greatest snowman in the world. Then more excitement evolves as the snowman starts to melt and they try to get him to the freezer. Although it is too late to save the snowman, the trio experience a happy ending with an ice cream cone decorated with candy. The big zany illustrations go along well with the comic spirit of the story, and it is a good book for adults to read aloud. Youngsters should enjoy the fun and frivolous action and the goofy little characters. Reviewer: Vicki Foote

K-Gr 2—Charles, Elvis, and Babs peer out the window one morning and see every child's biggest dream—snow! The three animals, a chinchilla, a worm, and a bird, head outside to make the greatest snowman in the world. Their first one, while large, is a little underwhelming, so they try again. Their next attempt is creative and successful, but then the sun comes out. Even the rapidly melting snowman doesn't dampen their enthusiasm as they make an even-greater snowman out of ice cream. He's definitely the greatest. The three animals have manic personalities—their excitement is palpable in the use of exclamation points and words in a large, colorful font. This story and the illustrations have a lot of energy, but it's all a little frenetic. The animals convey expression and personality through their enormous eyes and mouths, and as they are mostly yelling with excitement, there isn't much that readers can connect with. The perspective shifts from page to page, giving the book even more frantic energy. This book's impact will melt as quickly as the snowman.—Susan E. Murray, Glendale Public Library, AZ
Kirkus Reviews
Ultra-enthusiastic Charles Chinchilla, sourpuss Babs McBoid and agreeable, bucktoothed Elvis Wormly build, at Charles's urging, the titular snowman. Even Babs reluctantly joins in the fun as Charles adds an inventive array of accessories to their lumpy, be-twigged snowman. But just as they announce it's finished ("TA-DA!!!"), the sun comes out. Whatever can the three friends do? Nickelodeon animator Hannan dresses up this barely-there plot with lots of shouting and rushing around. No frenetic pace, however, can disguise the fact that these three characters are just plain unpleasant, especially the SpongeBob-shaped Charles, whose mouth gapes in a permanent rictus. Even if kids are drawn to the TV-cartoon look, they are unlikely to find this tale at all rewarding, and it's hard to imagine many parents wanting to put themselves through this one a second time.
