The Greenhouse Effect

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
These volumes each provide an overview of an important ecological issue. In a clear, well-organized manner, with a minimum of scientific terminology, they delineate the causes of the problems, their detrimental effects, and offer possible solutions. They will be useful to anyone needing a cogent exposition of these complex topics. The captioned photographs, diagrams, and drawings illustrate and amplify the text. Unfortunately, some of them are not entirely accurate. The implication that the greenhouse effect is the cause of an apparent increase in natural disasters is misleading, and one chart confuses it with the destruction of the ozone layer. The comfortable print, wide margins, and bold illustrations make a more appealing format for young readers than Gay's Greenhouse Effect (1986) and Ozone (1989, both Watts). The glossaries and arrangement by subtopics make the books accessible for ready reference. --Meryl Silverstein, American Museum of Natural History, New York City
