Meet the Author

Avery O. Craven taught for many years at the University of Chicago. After his retirement there he continued to teach at other institutions, including the University of Wisconsin and the University of Maryland. He received the A.B. degree from Simpson College, the M.A. degree from Harvard University and Cambridge University, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Chicago. He served as president of the Mississippi Valley Historical Association and the Southern Historical Association, and twice delivered the Walter Lynwood Fleming Lectures in Southern History at Louisiana State University. Among his books are The Repressible Conflict, Civil War in the Making, Edmund Ruffin, Southerner, The Coming of the Civil War, An Historian and the Civil War, and The Ending of the Civil War.
