Melissa J. Taylor has had pet guinea pigs since the age of nine. Her first one was entered in a local any-pet-goes contest, and won an award for "most unusual name." (She had no idea that Violet Butterscotch meant "purple yellow!")
She first came up with the concept for the Guinea Pigs' Storybook series to help bring different ages together to read aloud. Although the books can also be read alone, there are various things people of all ages can enjoy, from hidden flowers to search for, to silly puns to laugh over together.
Five of the eight friends in the series are based on a few of the guinea pigs Melissa has owned . . . including purple yellow! Er, Violet Butterscotch.
