Don't buy this book. I am extremely disappointed with this book. I thought the SKS would be given equal time, instead there are fifteen pages, mostly of poor photographs, on the SKS. The rest of the book covers some oddities of AKs, but is in no way comprehensive or even very original. There are numerous plugs for after-market producers with which the author has done business. The writing is poor. The pictures are mediocre, mostly shots of guys holding AKs, in which you can see the person's face far better than you can see the gun. This book is not a good reference, an interesting read, or a worthwhile introduction. Forget this book.

I read the book cover to cover at least twice, with substantial returns to specific sections. I own and have used SKSs casually for years and AK47s even more, but knew little about them. The book certainly increased my knowledge and appreciation for the two rifles, but seemed to leave some voids. I kept thinking that the author left out certain basic lnowledge which I did not have and was glossed over or taken for granted. In that regard, I felt the book was less than it could be. Further, there were a lot of inside jokes-info appreciated only by well informed readers on the subject of the rifles. Those criticisms aside, I did enjoy the book, learned a great deal on the subject matter, and would absolutely buy the book again. If one is interested in these rifles, especially regarding the AK 47, he will learn quite a bit about that rifle. The section on the SKS is far less satisfactory, and presents much less information on this rifle. Too bad, as for plinking and pick-up gun rack use, the SKS is the far better choice. Still, this is the best popular-reading book on the subject matter and worth the read.

Lots of info and very entertaining for the practical shooter and the collector.

While the parts of the book on the Ak are fairly good. I have to wait until nearly the end of the book to read anything on the SKS and then it is only one chapter. The title of the book is very deceiving, in fact SKS should be left out. The author should have left the chapter out on the SKS. If I had known this, I would have not bought the book. Sweeney should be charged with theft!
