    Before McLuhan Became a Household Word

    In Marshall McLuhan's view, history is not determined by politics or economics or weather or gunpowder or science per se so much as by our media--the 'extensions of man.' 'The Gutenberg Galaxy' is a must-read prequel to anyone who liked the much better-known and more radical 'Understanding Media.' Essentially 'Galaxy' does for print techology what 'Understanding Media' does for electronic technology. McLuhan assesses how European civilization went from an ear-touch (listening) oriented mode of receving information to an eye-oriented (that is, reading) mode of receiving information. Recalling that for McLuhan, the medium IS the message, so the invention and dissemination of printing-press technology and the sharp rise in literacy it occasioned therefore brought about a major seismic shift in Western thought and all that goes with it--language, mores, dress, politics, etc. Think of how the English dressed during the late Renaissance and compare that to the English of James I, for example. Think of how our concept of 'privacy' emerged along with the idea of a person alone in a room reading a book (usually the Bible). 'Galaxy' is a faster read than 'Understanding Media' because it is more tied to traditional academic expression and more linear (or, as McLuhan would say, 'lineal') in its exposition. To me it was a very illuminating work.
