Library JournalWhen the financially incompetent William Melcombe dies, leaving his family destitute, the spirit of Lady Margaret decides to rectify the situation. Granted permission by the powers that be to leave her portrait each year on Halloween and look after the family interests, Lady Margaret sets about doing just that; but a match between Lord Justin Alderney, a notorious rake but the only available choice on such short notice, and the innocent Rowena Melcombe is certainly going to take more than a bit of magic to pull off. Heath (The Makeshift Marriage, Signet: NAL, 1994) offers a well-written, charming story with an interesting premise. Fans of Regencies with a paranormal twist might also like Mary Chase Comstock's A Midsummer's Magic (Zebra Bks., 1994) and Kasey Michaels's The Haunted Miss Hampshire (Avon, 1992).
