Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
"Jack" is Jack Russell, a dog detective who lives in Australia and tries to keep his humans in line and trouble at bay. When Jack's owner, Sarge, decides to get married, it is up to Jack and his other dog pals to make sure that everything runs smoothly. Things go awry, however, when the wedding ham is stolen. Jack and his junior assistant, Preacher, follow the clues and identify the culprit. By a fortunate turn of circumstances, Jack and his friends actually get to eat the evidence, and a new wedding ham is procured just in time for the festivities. This is the eleventh book in the "Jack Russell: Dog Detective" series. There are a lot of characters involved in the plot. Even with a foreword which identifies all the players, it can be a little confusing, which is one reason why children might want to read the earlier stories first. This is a good book for children learning to read. The repetition of certain words and sentences, the glossaries that are at the end of every chapter, and the sections entitled "Jack's Facts" (bits of information interjected into the story by Jack), all reinforce and aid the reading process. There are loads of wordplays that will both amuse readers and help them recognize syllables and word combinations (for example, "pan-dog-monium" is defined as "a lot of noise that involves dogs"). Children who enjoyed the "Wishbone" television series about another Jack Russell terrier-detective will probably enjoy this series as well. Reviewer: Leona Illig
