I taught it would be about the Buddha and it's teachings. Instead it just listed a lot of philosophical sayings taken out of certain pages of the original book. In the beginning it tells you where to purchase the complete book. It was OK; I did highlight some sayings I liked to put up in my office. I hope the rest of the free books offered by B & N are not a disappointment; because it appears most of them are not the complete book.

Susan,
Thank for your translation of the Dhammapada. I had "lost" my pocket sized copy on a recent plane flight. Counter to Buddha-dharma, I missed having my copy and wanted another.
To many versions are cluttered with notes or whose translation is to formal. I found your version to be just right. :)
Namaste,
Steve

I know there are a lot of you out ther skirting the edge, looking for the answer . . . I come from the perhaps worst - 4Square/ fundamentalist/pentacostal! I have tried to be a solitary practionair(sp) of this for awhile. The thing about it though is that this openly invites, exploring faith (belief) within community. Community can be shared but not found online!
To connect you have to connect. To know you have to know. To feel you have to feel.
I found this to be soothing, realistic, and real! It broke it down for me. . .

I have been studying buddhism for about three months now, and this is truly an eye opening book. it is short in length yet speaks with simple to understand metaphors. I actually highlighted many of thepassages and will put them to good use in my future.

Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged. This is, as far as my limited knowledge goes, a good translation - at the very least the text is easy to read and presented nicely.
Word of warning on the ebook: Whomever put together the electronic format managed to create it so the ebook believes it is 26 pages long, it is considerably longer than that and is the full Dhammapada (which is more than 26 pages translated). Only mildly irritating when trying to go by page count, does not detract from the text itself.

I haven't read any other translations of the Dhammapada yet, but this felt like a good start for a new student to Buddhism like myself.

Overview
This ancient book of Buddhist wisdom is older than the Bible. Rewritten in clear, clean modern language, the words of the Buddha will connect with the modern reader. The Dhammapada has been called the distilled essence of Buddhism. In 423 brief verses, said to be actual sayings from the Buddha himself, you will find inspiration and guidance.
