Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Using the series signature question-and-answer format, this title offers 600 entries on the major artists, schools, periods, movements, and techniques of art from all areas of the world. Arranged chronologically (after an introductory chapter explaining art principles and history, such as What is art? What is beauty?) from the art of the ancient world c.5000 BCE-400 BCE to contemporary art from the 1960s to the present, the book provides much fascinating detail. Humor is a welcome extra in entries that ask, for example, "Why do Egyptian figures have two left feet?," "Why is Emperor Comoodus dressed as Hercules?," and "Were there any professional women artists during the 15th and 16th centuries?" Key works of art are depicted in the title's 145 color photos and illustrations, and helpful charts delineate more complex or confusing concepts. VERDICT Recommended for junior and senior high school students and adult general readers.—Marcia G. Welsh, Dartmouth Coll. Lib., Hanover, NH

The Handy Art History Answer Book … a truly colorful gift. —The Bookworm Sez

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
Most volumes of the "Handy Answer Book" series aim to cover vast areas of knowledge in a question-and-answer format. That method of organization has drawbacks, especially for readers who have little knowledge of the subject presented and don't know what questions to ask. However, as one of the most successful in the series, this well-produced book offers basic information about elements of art and architecture, media employed, and a timeline of world art beginning with Prehistoric (from 35,000 B.C.) and continuing into the present. Dickerson's approach is to include art of diverse civilizations from all continents, including Chinese, Japanese, African, Indian, Islamic, Pacific, and Latin American, as well as traditional Western art. Obviously, not everything can be included; for example, there is very little on Russian art (should that be someone's subject of inquiry) other than brief mentions of icons, Repin (as Russian Realist), Malevich, and Kandinsky—where are Andrei Rublev and his glorious angels? Still, curious art explorers could very well start at the beginning and just devour the entire book; answers to particular questions will most likely lead on to others. Though entries are short, they provide clues for further viewing in specific art books, on the Internet, or at museums. Sections called "Early Twentieth-Century Avant-Garde" and "Contemporary Art, 1960s—Present" are especially helpful for clarifying often-confusing movements and styles. The color photos selected tend to be small, but clearly reproduced (sometimes with too much contrast) on good glossy paper. Though it would be difficult to select favorites, Le Corbusier's concrete Chapel of Notre-Dame-du-Haut, Jasper Johns' bold Three Flags, and the spectacular fifteenth-century mausoleum of Tamerlane are especially eye-catching. With Leonardo's beautiful Ginevra de' Benci beckoning from cover and title page, any curious art-lover will find some intriguing information to investigate further. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
