VOYA, August 2014 (Vol. 37, No. 3) - Jamie Hansen
Biology encompasses every aspect of the natural world from anatomy to zoology, and from cytology to ecology. Utilizing the question-and-answer format to entice casual readers and browsers, this volume provides brief responses to 1,250 queries about microbial, plant, animal, and human biology, never neglecting the roles of important scientists and researchers. Numerous illustrations, diagrams, charts, and sidebars add to the volume’s visual appeal. Unfortunately, the complexity of the life sciences demands a more comprehensive and scholarly treatment, and not the casual tone and arbitrary choice of subject matter found in this book. For example, in the chapter on animal diversity, information about the largest and smallest bear species follows a query asking whether any cats live in the desert, while random questions about camels, armadillos, bats, and animal longevity conclude the section. It is especially difficult to accept the information found in a science book lacking an index, a glossary, suggestions for further reading, or references. The text also contained numerous errors and omissions. Some readers might be surprised to discover that male cats are queens and female horses are sires. Presumably, editors will correct such content errors in the published work. While no single book can provide all the information about life science, ultimately The Handy Biology Answer Book may leave readers with more questions than answers. Public libraries and media centers might consider adding this occasionally entertaining, but ultimately unsatisfying, volume to a circulating collection where other books in the series have proved popular. Reviewer: Jamie Hansen; Ages 11 to Adult.
