Great for Cub scouts!

I bought these for my son and for the gift at our Cub Scout gift exchange! How can you not buy this for cub scouts. Especially The Bears!

    Much better than I expected!

The book is well laid out. It gives some history regarding cordage & knots and also great technical information regarding when to use what kinds of rope. The illustrations are excellent and I never had any idea there were so many different kinds of knots!

I am having so much fun learning the knots! Something I've always wanted to do since I was a kid. I wish I had this book 10 years ago so I could have used it to teach my son. Anyway, there is also a chapter on teaching knot tying to others, so I'm teaching it to my now 20 year old son!

    Great Gift for My Grandsons

Two of my grandsons are now in Cub Scouts with every indication they will go on to be successful Boy Scouts. (Their dad and grandpa are both Eagle Scouts among other scouting honors). I originally gave them this kit to learn various knots so they could earn a badge for this skill. It soon became obvious that they also learned how practical every day life can be when they know good ways to secure items with ropes. They amaze me with how they know these things. Either I'm going to borrow the kit or go buy another one for myself - it's just good stuff to know.

    Well, well worth it...

Pros: The price (under $9) cannot be beat for a concise book with four pieces of practice rope. Presentation is nice (shrink-wrapped, bound well, nice worn-looking cardboard. The book itself has a nice glossy cover and crisp well defined pages. Illustrations are simple and to the point. Annotations are good and on the light/jovial side.

Cons: Book is too small and spine is too tight to open pages easily. Cannot practice with rope and keep book open to view diagrams without forcing the spine, which immediately and permanently creases it. Knot books should be spiral bound for this very reason.

The rope itself it not the highest quality nor are they long enough, but hey its practice rope and like I said, the whole thing is $9.

Conclusion: I collect knot books so I HAD to have this. I would not NOT buy this for any reason, however. It'd be great as a present to a youngster learning how to tie, but for an adult, a more appopriate gift would be one of the larger knot books that are easier to handle.
