American Reference Books Annual
The book itself operates like a trivia game with a myriad number of questions loosely arranged under each topic. The book is recommended for public libraries and anyone with a casual interest in geography.

VOYA - Marilyn Brien
Encapsulating the world in one volume is a monumental task. The format of the book with packaged questions for students is not one of this reviewer's favorites, but the large section devoted to the key statistics for 195 countries of the world based upon the CIA's World Factbook, however, stands out. The other chapters give general information about the physical world as well as political and cultural geography followed by separate chapters on regions of the world. A group of black-and-white maps precede the index. The book helpfully contains answers to timely questions generally not covered in a geography book such as "How can GPS keep me from getting lost?" or "Who is an ayatollah?" or "What is Bollywood?" There is a mixture of historical and current information for each region covered. An anecdote about how a map stopped cholera relates mapping to health. Terms include balkanization, fjord, monsoon, apartheid, and Reich. Captain Cook and Osama bin Laden are two persons included. There is a wealth of information in this resource that is of value for study in both social and natural sciences. Reviewer: Marilyn Brien
