Tucci (former global information and publishing manager; The Handy Personal Finance Answer Book) uses a question-and-answer format to introduce investing for individuals. He poses and supplies the result for queries such as: What is market risk? What is a mutual fund? What is private equity? His answers range from a single sentence to several paragraphs. Rudimentary questions are grouped together, allowing the author to thoroughly flesh out each topic; he employs seven questions and answers over the length of a page and a half to explore the concept of a stock's beta, for example. This arrangement permits readers to either skip answers or read more deeply. Tucci covers a broad range of basic and not-so-basic investing and personal finance topics including saving, debt, investment choices, taxes, investor psychology, and risk. He also incorporates a brief course in economics and provides references for further research. VERDICT The title's question-and-answer format may be off putting to some readers, but because of Tucci's clever handling of it, neophyte and even more sophisticated investors will find this work a clear and expansive introduction.—Lawrence Maxted, Gannon Univ. Lib., Erie, PA
