Editorial Reviews

Hazel Rochman
A docu-novel with a clear purpose, this paperback re-creates the contemporary scene with wit and drama so that readers will care about the characters and the issues. When a teenager is suspected of scrawling the names of seven concentration camps on a Boston Jewish temple, 15-year-old Zach is drawn into the case. His father is the district attorney, and he brings his work home. Zach's girlfriend, it turns out, is the daughter of Holocaust survivors, and when their story is finally told, it is stark, harrowing, and unforgettable. There's far too much plot--not only the history and the whodunit, but also enough sports action, romance, family, and friendship dynamics for six YA novels--but the dialogue is sharp and lively, and YAs will be held by Zach's fast-paced, first-person narrative. Use this with Laird's "But Can the Phoenix Sing?" , in which a Holocaust survivor tells his story to his stepson today, for curriculum discussion on racism throughout history and now.

This is one of the worst books I have ever read. Way too much conversations. Zack's and Rachael's characters were dull no real emotions. There was nothing to really connect me to any part of the story or the characters. No action,no drama, no suspense. I do not understand how this book was rated 5 stars. This was certainly no page turner, but I managed some how to turn all 151 pages.

    Great book!

I think that this is a great book! It really showed me how hard it must have been for those people back during that time. It showed me even what seemed to be a small crime can be such a big offense! I relly learned a lot from this book and if you choose to read it you will too.

How true can a book get?

I usually don't enjoy reding but, I just couldn't put this book down. This book made me feel like I was the main character, Zack, and I was involved in all the problems he was facing just based on a hate crime. Since Zack is Jewish, and the hate crime was an anti-semitic gesture towards Jews, he was very affected by it. This book isn't just fun to read, it teaches us a lesson about what hate crimes can not only do to you, but the whole community.
