Overview

After battling a malevolent ghost that held the spirit of her friend Ian MacKinnon bound to the land for two hundred years, sixteen-year-old reluctant psychic, Riley Williams, felt as if she was finally easing into her new life in Scotland.

Or so she thought.

Laria, the spirit of the witch who had cursed Ian wants revenge for Riley's interference and she's bringing along friends--dark entities who thrive on evil.

The one bright spot in Riley's world is Ian's descendent, Kade MacKinnon, who could easily be Ian's modern day twin. The parallels between the two guys are undeniable. As Riley's relationship with Kade blossoms, she begins to realize Laria has grown in her power since their last confrontation--a power that could very well manipulate the living just as effectively as the dead.

Please note: THE HAUNTED is a mature YA. Due to strong language, mention of alcohol and drug use, cutting, and sexual content, it is not recommended for younger teens.

I just can’t get enough of this series and the second book did not disappoint! These characters are so real and bring out such emotion that it was hard to put this book down. The dark romance and danger keep building and bring with it more exciting twists and turns in this book. I really grew to like Kade as a character. The relationship between him and Riley I couldn’t help being excited over this new love interest. Laria is even worse than before and it was exciting to see how Riley handled both her and her growing powers. Fans of the first book are sure to love “The Haunted” which gives readaers even more action and romance than the first.

I love the MacKinnon Curse series by J.A. Templeton. Templeton, in her first book The Deepest Cut, had my heart pleading for Riley and Ian’s love that could never be, and left me with a broken heart. But with The Haunted, Templeton pieces it back together, but not without tears and eerie chills. Riley is an awesome character. She has faced so much heart break and pain in her sixteen years, but she’s not a quitter. I love that about Riley—her strong-will to keep fighting for her family and the love she thought she could never have, but most of all, for herself. J.A. Templeton is an amazingly talented writer. She has given me the most intriguing, heart-felt story with a beautiful love that is forever. Riley thought she had gotten rid of Laria after breaking her curse that held Ian earthbound, but that was just the beginning for Riley. With the MacKinnon curse, Riley will fight more than just Laria. Riley is fighting for her life and everybody she loves this time. With Ian gone, Riley is alone now to face the evil spirit Laria, but when Riley meets Kade, who is a descendent of Ian’s, she starts to feel that maybe Ian hasn't left her alone in this curse, after all. Kade was everything I was hoping for up until the party. Right along with Riley's heart, mine was ripped to shreds. I thought J.A Templeton ripped my heart right out of me with Ian, but what she has happen with Kade and Riley is like pouring salt into an open wound. Dang! (not my first choice word I wanted to use here to express my feeling lol) This was painful to read, but J.A. definitely puts heartache in her storylines and this is what I love about her novels. I’m also glad that The Haunted was a mature YA. For me, I love where the new YA is going. It’s just more believable with the teens of today and I can't wait until spring for the third book, The Departed, in the MacKinnon Curse. I highly recommend The Haunted as a chilling and heart-melting romance must read.

This review is for the entire series. I absolutely LOVED this series. The source that I found it from emails me a list of free and inexpensive books every day, and some of them are horrible. I never know what to expect when I start reading one, but I was pleasantly surprised with this one. I purchased the entire series together, which is part of the reason I'm writing the review all together. The editing was a little lacking, and I found a few typos throughout the series, but not enough to take away from the story for me. This is one of the only negative things I have to say about this series. I was hooked from the very moment I started reading this. J.A. Templeton does an amazing job creating visuals, and the very first time the main character saw a ghost I was already feeling a little creeped out! I know I am someone who gets creeped out by stuff like that pretty easily so not everyone may have that immediate reaction, but I assure you it only intensifies as things progress. Further into the series I found myself getting very scared. I do most of my reading at night and there were nights that I didn't read just because I was terrified. I wouldn't think reading words on a page would have my heart thumping in my chest or dreading turning the page, but this series did that to me pretty much the whole way through, especially the second and third books. Personally, I liked that the focus seemed to be more on the suspense than on the romance, if only slightly. For others this may be a mark for the Cons column, but for me the romance was almost a side point to the ghosts that were scaring the crap out of me! The other negative point I have about the MacKinnon Curse series is that it's a bit short. In the last book, one minute you were right in the middle of some crazy stuff going on, and then all of a sudden the whole conflict was resolved. While I do feel J.A. Templeton did a good job giving readers complete content, I enjoyed the books so much that I just would have loved if they took longer to get through. While I would have moved more books to read, I'm happy the author stopped at a trilogy (with the exception of the short prequel). I hate when authors get in the habit of writing a problem per book and fill a series with a bunch of books where the main conflict is resolved within that book and the next has a whole different problem. I feel like this is an easy way to make a really long series and I tend to get bored of these. Templeton wrote a series that flowed very well and made sense within itself. In addition to enjoying the story, I also enjoyed Templeton's writing style. I highly recommend this series to people who like the genre of supernatural romance/supernatural suspense. There is some content that may be disturbing to some readers, including self-harm and witchcraft/dark magic. If these are triggers for you, take discretion with reading. Otherwise, give it a try! I have tons of books I still have to read, but I loved this so much that I'm going to go buy the first book in the MacKinnon Legacy series and read that, first. Enjoy!
