Overview

The Healthy Body Book is an activity book, a conversation starter and an educational tool that engages children in learning about, respecting, and caring for their bodies. It empowers healthy choices - like exercise and eating healthy - and sets kids on a path to create healthy habits for their lifetime.. It also helps them to discover their power to make a difference in their own health and well-being.
Through the book, each child gets to explore and record their appreciation for the gifts that they get from their body and discover ways that they can "be a friend" back to their body by taking care of it and keeping it healthy. The Healthy Body Book offer children a chance to be the author of their own story through activities that help them better appreciate the complexity and uniqueness of their bodies and, in turn, nurture habits that will have a positive impact on their health and well-being throughout their lives.

A Great Resource For Discussing How The Body Works and How To Care For It

I am a mother and a long time fan of Ellen Sabin's interactive children's books. In the past I have watched my children co-author "The Giving Book", "The Hero Book", and "The Greening Book". Through these books I have watched as they put aside part of their allowance, to give to a children's hospital. I got to help them choose role models based on ideals that I try to instill in them, and I saw them learn and truly understand why it is so important to take care of the earth. Now, through "The Healthy Body Book" I have been able to see them learn how their bodies take care of them, and why it is so important to make healthy decisions, so that they can take care of their bodies. I have always had a hard time approaching this subject, especially with my daughter (who has a sweet tooth and is a little overweight) as I would often worry about giving her a negative body image. With both of my children I often found it hard to explain subjects like "why it is important to live an active lifestyle", and "why they can have one cookie, but not two", and this book does an amazing job of pointing out that some of the activities that they already love, like playing tag, jump rope, and baseball are fun AND contribute to healthy living, and it also explains the importance of moderation and lets the kids think about some healthy alternatives that taste just as good as sugary sweets, but are also good for their bodies. By going through the activities in "The Healthy Body Book" I was able to talk and bond with both of my kids about how awesome and unique their bodies are, and I saw them learn more about their bodies, and how to take care of them. This book is just as helpful for parents as it is for children because it engages both parties in discussions and activities about health, while allowing for a fun bonding experience.

A Good, Smart Book for Smart, Inquisitive Kids

This book, like the others I have purchased from the same author, strikes what I consider to be just the right tone.

'The Healthy Body Book' does an admirable job of creating an inviting, engaging tone for young readers for whom this may be a new and potentially daunting topic, the complex workings of the wondrous and sometimes mystifying 'machine' which is the human body.

At the same time, it does so in a direct, no-nonsense fashion that is expansive, thoughtful, and respectful of a young person's impressive appetite for real knowledge, without resorting to the simplification or cartoonishness found too often in this arena.

I would recommend this book to anyone whose children are starting to develop an awareness of the world and their bodies. Through its graphically appealing and interactive format, 'The Healthy Body Book' provides a terrific basis for setting the stage for further exploration in health and science and, just as importantly, developing an appreciation of the notion of ownership and responsibility when it comes to what the author aptly describes as "the coolest machine you will ever own."
