Overview

They never should have met.
Dutiful citizen and school principal Kerrin Horton is serving four years as mayor of the small California desert town of Freedom. Professional thief Gary Sullivan is doing twenty-five years-to-life on a burglary charge in Chino State Prison. But when the FBI needs an expert in security systems to prevent a bombing in Freedom, they temporarily extract Gary from prison and set him undercover in Kerrin's threatened town.
As the only one to know Gary's true identity, Kerrin determines to keep her constituents safe from the black hearted criminal. Meanwhile Gary, intent only on earning his promised sentence reduction, tries to steer clear of Mayor Goody-Two-Shoes. But when Gary gets roped into teaching summer school to the town's troubled teens, Kerrin finds the felon acts more like a mother hen than a monster. Gary, once so tough, is dismayed by Kerrin's growing respect, and soon discovers there's more danger in one innocent woman than in all the prisons to which he's ever been sent.

Meet the Author

Alyssa Kress completed her first novel at the age of six, an unlikely romance between a lion and the jackal who wants to steal his meal. Despite earning two degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and spending nearly a decade in the construction industry, she's yet to see her feet stay firmly on the ground. She now lives in Southern California, three miles from where she first committed pen to paper, together with her husband and two children.

At first I thought that there was way too much backstory, and it seemed to start kind of slow. But, once I got further into the book all the backstory actually became very necessary. I really loved this story. I didn't want to put it down...it was so different that it really kept my attention. Once you get past the inital couple of chapters it becomes such a great story. All I have to say is, stick with it and read it to the end!

Though a most unlikely plot (that's why it is called FICTION, it doesn't have to be true to life) is was enjoyable. The characters were fun and likeable. There were a couple of items that were never solved, at least as far as I am concerned, but that didn't really detract from the story.
