The finale to Coulter's bride trilogy brings the cast from those previous novels to Scotland, where the sister of the Earl of Sherbrooke has just eloped with a Scottish laird. The new bride, Joan, is appalled to find herself the stepmother of two children and caretaker of a run-down castle, which she must share with a malevolent aunt and a her spouse's fey sister-in-law (from her beloved's previous marriage). A murder mystery, feuding clans, and bridal-night terrors are also stirred into the plot, which features an appearance by a ghost called Pearlin' Jane. Coulter is more interested in detailed accountings of the newlywed's many sexual encounters than she is in the historical setting, but her story is moderately interesting and holds some surprises.
