Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Selections from three earlier books unite in The Helen Oxenbury Nursery Collection by Oxenbury. With poems, nursery rhymes and stories from Tiny Tim-Verses for Children; Cakes and Custard: The Helen Oxenbury Nursery Rhyme Book and The Helen Oxenbury Nursery Story Book, readers can catch up on favorites such as "Sing a Song of Sixpence" and "The Three Billy Goats Gruff," plus make new acquaintances, such as "Desperate Dan." Children's Literature
The award-winning illustrator, Helen Oxenbury, has brought her considerable talent to a new collection of classic stories and rhymes. The collection is divided into three sections, each of which has been gleaned from a previous publication by the illustrator. Section one, "Verses from Tiny Tim," has favorite Tiny Tim rhymes ranging from the very obscure to the more well-known verse about the lady with the alligator purse. Section two contains other nursery rhymes, again with several relatively little known verses but others that are more familiar, such as "Sing a Song of Sixpence." The final section is entitled "Nursery Stories" and has such traditional favorites as "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Goldilocks and the Three Bears." As could be expected of a book from such a well-known and talented illustrator, the collection has lots of fine illustrations that add humorous drawings to already humorous verses. For example, in The Three Bears we see a true family unit of bears with personality, and in "Little Red Riding Hood" we have a dancing wolf. This is a fine collection of classic children's literature and will be very useful in introducing the traditional tales and rhymes to a generation of children who have had limited exposure to this body of work. 2004, Alfred A. Knopf, Ages 2 to 6.
