The Hellenistic Pottery from Sardis: The Finds through 1994by Susan I. Rotroff, Andrew Oliver Jr.
Pub. Date: 03/01/2004
Publisher: Harvard University Press
This report is the culmination of work that began on the pottery of Sardis during the first excavations at the site in 1973. The ceramic assemblage described here reflects the changing fortunes of the city from the time of Alexander the Great to Augustus and demonstrates how this political and commercial centre changed over time. The ceramic assemlage is organised by category or type, including Wheelmade and Relief wares, and each section includes text and a catalogue of finds. Local and imported wares, and local imitations of foreign wares, are found within the assemblage attesting to the 'tenacity of indigenous customs and to the influences of the foreign powers that dominated her'.
