W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was an English playwright and writer. He was a popular and prolific author, producing twenty novels, more than two dozen plays, and numerous articles, short stories, and travelogues. In addition to his literary success, Maugham was one of the first writers to make significant earnings from film adaptations and was perhaps the highest-paid author during the 1930s.

THE HERO is an early novel by Somerset Maugham. Set just after the end of the Boer War, the story follows a young English veteran, Jamie Parsons, who returns from the war to find he no longer has the same values or worldview he had prior to the war, and no longer wants to marry his longtime financee. This aggrieves his conservative parents, who continue to see the world as they always did.
