Gr 1-5-The teeming medieval city of Bremen has outgrown its boundaries. When the citizens try to obtain more property from the rich countess whose lands surround them, they are tricked into an arrangement whereby Bremen can have all the land that a man can walk around in one day-starting at the east gate at dawn and ending at the west gate at sundown. The man chosen to accomplish this task by the countess's scheming nephew is the crippled Hans Cobbler, who sets out bravely to crawl through pasture, bog, and forest on his hands and knees. Just when Hans believes he has surely failed, his own legendary hero, Roland, appears. Roland stops the progress of the sun and travels at Hans's side until he reaches the west gate just at sundown. Hodges quickens her retelling with the assurance of a master storyteller. Her repeated description of the way Hans navigates- ``knuckles and knees, knuckles and knees''-adds both rhythm and imagery. Mikolaycak's robust, authoritative style, rendered in watercolor on diazo prints made from pencil drawings, is well suited to the medieval story. Strong line and an earthy palette underscore the tale's dramatic power. The only discrepancy is the artist's depiction of Hans, who in the text is portrayed as consistently cheerful in the face of adversity, but in the paintings appears to be notably mournful in countenance. This is a minor flaw in an otherwise compelling tale that successfully makes the point that ``heroes come in all shapes and sizes, and there are many kinds of battle.''-Kate McClelland, Perrot Memorial Library, Greenwich, CT

This moving legend within a legend tells of Hans the Cobbler, a disabled shoemaker who loves to share stories about Roland, the famous knight who saved the walled city of Bremen during the Dark Ages and who, according to Hans, will come again in time of need. The citizens of the overcrowded city need more land and hope to buy some from a wealthy countess whose nephew offers to sell them "all the land that a man can walk around in a day." But then he picks Hans to be that man. With the help of the hero Roland, who appears to Hans and stops time, the humble shoemaker is able to complete his journey, crawling on "knuckles and knee." As usual, Mikolaycak's realistic watercolor and colored pencil drawings have powerful lines, sculptural forms, and a strong narrative quality. Inspired by the varnished sixteenth-century paintings of Hans Holbein, the architectural and costume details establish the Renaissance setting. This eloquent retelling of a gentle, little-known tale honoring the chivalric virtues of service and sacrifice is all the more beautiful for its understated quality; the documentation is detailed and scholarly. A treat for reading aloud, this may lead middle-graders to stories about Roland, such as Jay Williams' prose version, "The Horn of Roland" (1968).
