Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Hershey's claims that "milk chocolate plus math equals fun." Their point is well-taken with this zany book that introduces children to the world of basic math. The first page illustrates a plus sign, a minus sign, an equal sign and a Hershey's Kiss, which is the counting unit used throughout the book. From there, clowns carry, drag, throw and juggle Hershey's Kisses to illustrate each addition equation. Most of the equations use single digits, but the book then adds single digits to the number 10. Equations are done horizontally and vertically. After readers become familiar with the concept of adding two numbers together, the book provides a few examples of equations that add three numbers together. Finally, the last page illustrates a subtraction equation to introduce the concept of taking away. The book's format is creative and the illustrations are appealing. However, the book would not have universal appeal because of the number of children allergic to chocolate and because sugar is restricted in many children's diets for dietary or health reasons. Hershey's also has a similar title devoted to fractions. 2001, Cartwheel Books/Scholastic, . Ages 5 to 8. Reviewer: Jeanne K. Pettenati
