Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Titles spring forth with various interactive accoutrements. The pair that brought readers the pop-up The Wide-Mouthed Frog now introduce The Hiccuping Hippo by Keith Faulkner, illus. by Jonathan Lambert. The hero cannot shake his hiccups, despite the remedies proffered by his animal friends, each of which literally leaps off the page with their suggestions. Readers should find humor in both the text and the bright, sponge-textured characters' expressions and actions. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
If you have ever tried to get rid of a stubborn case of the hiccups, then this book will do it. Your child will forget all about the hiccups as each page unfolds in exquisite pop-ups. Glorious, intricate, bold cutouts of some favorite animals try to scare Hippo into stopping his hiccups, but fail. (It would be good to have hiccups while reading, just to see if the premise works.) Even though none of the animals succeed individually, it ends in triumph when all the animals team up together and give Hippo the biggest "Booo" yet. Once again this author/illustrator combo delights both youngster and parents in getting a heads-up on a human affliction. Lambert's intricate three dimensional pop-ups of an orangutan, a python, a stork, and of course, the Hippo, look like he uses a sponge paint overlay on either a tissue paper collage technique or short broad paint stokes. Young children will be hard pressed not to touch, but the book is pretty sturdy and a lesson in petting could be told. 2004, Dial Books for Young Readers, Ages 5 up.
