This hefty debut from the late Gordon (1944-2005) and his son-in-law Scott launches a sprawling fantasy trilogy with touches of effective horror. After a lengthy setup, timid bank manager Steven Taylor, athletic history teacher Mark Jenkins and law student Hannah Sorenson fall through a magical tapestry into a politically complex world under the dominion of body-hopping demonic sorcerer Nerak. Several independent subplots and an unwieldy supporting cast slowly draw together as Steven discovers his budding magical powers, Mark finds romance with a fierce resistance fighter and Hannah seeks a way home. Though somewhat unfocused in their plotting and often rehashing standard fantasy elements, Scott and Gordon keep the story moving entertainingly to the end, less a conclusion than a pause before the simultaneously released sequel. Steven Taylor is an assistant bank manager in a quiet little town, and his roommate Mark Jenkins is a high school history teacher. Steven is bored with his job and the thought of going through all the accounts that haven't had a single transaction in the past 25 years sounds even more boringuntil he discovers the account of an old prospector who left $17,000 in October 1870now worth $6.3 million dollarsalong with an unopened safe deposit box. Finding the box’s long-lost key and opening it leads Steven and Mark into the land of Rona in the strange new world of Eldarn, where they are immediately captured by a group of resistance fighters. Rona has been occupied by Malakasia for nearly a thousand Twinmoons. An evil tyrant rules the land, but he wants more, in particular the key that will open the path for an ancient evil to manifest itself once and for all. Worse still, it is this same key that Steven and Mark will need if they are ever to get home.
Assistant bank manager Steven Taylor and his friend Mark Jenkins unwittingly open a portal into another world. Eldarn is on the brink of disaster as a tyrant's rule disguises the schemes of an evil wizard whose plans threaten Eldarn as well as Earth. When Taylor, Jenkins, and Taylor's girlfriend, Hannah, seek to return to their own world, they realize that they have inherited the doom of both realms and that their actions can decide the fate of their loved ones. First published in the UK in 2005, just after Gordon's death, this series opener combines old-fashioned action-adventure with epic fantasy, creating a world that resonates with echoes of Earth's history yet displays its own unique properties. Villains abound, from soul-draining demons to twisted, soulless men, in a bold first novel that deserves a wide readership from fans of classic as well as cross-over fantasy. Highly recommended for all fantasy collections.
