Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
During the Holocaust, teenager Anne Frank was hidden in the Secret Annex behind a moving bookcase in a building in Amsterdam. During the Holocaust, eight-year-old Lola Rein was hidden in an underground dirt hole dug in the floor of a barn in the Polish Ukraine, with a family of strangers. For nine months she remained in almost complete silence and darkness in a hole "deep enough for me to sit up in, kind of hunched, but too shallow to stand in, and too small for me to stretch out my legs." Unlike Anne Frank, Lola survived the Holocaust, reunited with the remnants of her family, and emigrated to America. This is her story. In a quietly compelling first-person narration (shaped by writer Lois Metzger, author of Yours, Anne — The Life of Anne Frank), Lola Rein Kaufman relates the wrenching story of the years leading up to the horrifying murder of her mother, who was shot by a Gestapo policeman trying to even the score with another policeman who first "shot my Jews." This builds to the story of Lola's escape, assisted by her loving and shortly-to-be-murdered grandmother, her months of hiding, and her long, numb journey to return, astonishingly, to a normal life. Kaufman and Metzger have delivered a powerful witness to the horrors of the Holocaust, to the courage of those who hid their Jewish neighbors, and most of all to the astonishing resilience of Holocaust survivors themselves. Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.
