Overview

What is it about ancient Egyptian art that fascinates us so, thousands of years after those who created it laid down their tools for the last time? The beauty of the tomb paintings, papyrus scrolls, reliefs, and sculptures of this ancient civilization is mesmerizing. So spectacular is Egyptian art that it inevitably draws the eye, yet it is its indefinable qualities that most stir our curiosity.

The magic of ancient Egyptian art emanates from its sheer mysteriousness. Why, for instance, are human figures sometimes portrayed with the heads of birds or animals? The hieroglyphs that, like captions, are incised or written alongside a puzzling-looking image clearly convey a message, but what is it? Why might an Egyptian family be immortalized looking incongruously overdressed in a marshland setting? Why were ancient Egyptians mummified and why, for that matter, were they then portrayed with plaited beards?

This extraordinary book will open your eyes to the hidden life of ancient Egypt, offering insight into the sophisticated secrets of a lost world by delving into fifty iconic artworks and decoding their details.

Divided into three main themes—the ancient Egyptian divine cosmos; the ancient Egyptian world; and the ancient Egyptian afterlife—The Hidden Life of Ancient Egypt examines and explains the religious beliefs, way of life, and philosophies that underpinned one of the most sophisticated ancient civilizations. Whether you are a newcomer to Egyptian art or have already been initiated into some of its secrets, this absorbing book will transport you into a magical world.
