Astrology — The Cosmic Science

Astrology is based on the Law of Correspondences, which states, "As above, so below." As it is written in the heavens, so life manifests on earth. It also implies "as within so without," which can mean surrounding the self with those things that resonate within. After many thousands of years of observing both celestial movements and terrestrial events, astrologers have developed a system allowing them to penetrate the complex patterns of human psychology and behavior. just as planetary cycles are astronomically predictable, so too are the directions of human activity.

Though a complex study to master, astrology is accessible to everyone on some level, as astrology's symbolic language is representative of the familiar objects, people, and situations that we encounter in our everyday lives. Each of us can look into ourselves and find that romantic Venusian aspect of our nature that seeks to magnetize, attract, and merge with the object of our hearts. Most of us know a friend born in April who charges headlong into life like a ram butting heads with a rival. Astrology endeavors to reveal the intimate and holistic relationship existing between the signs of the zodiac and the planets of the solar system with all expressions of life here on earth: mineral, vegetable, animal, and human.

Over time astrology has built up a number of associations based on the planets' rulership of the signs and the four elements: fire, earth, air, and water. Each of the planets had characteristics for the ancients that determined which parts of earthly existence they ruled. The Moon was considered feminine, nocturnal, cold, moist, and phlegmatic. Mercury is described as cold, dry, and changeable. Venus is considered feminine, cold, moist, nocturnal, and fortunate. The Sun is hot, dry, masculine, and fiery but more temperate than Mars. Mars was thought to be nocturnal, hot, dry, choleric, and fiery. Jupiter was considered diurnal, temperately hot, moist, and sanguine. And Saturn, the last planet known to the ancients, was diurnal, cold, dry, and melancholy. Astrologers then observed the natural world and derived rulerships for objects, animals, sounds, colors, etc.

This book considers the associations and rulerships of each sign and translates them into a message, suggestion, and description for each birthday.

Each of the 366 astrological passages found in the body of this book describes personality traits, activities, professions, and everyday things associated with a specific day of the year and updates them for our contemporary world.

In trying to create harmony in your world, you can derive comfort and power from having things near you that resonate with your with your sign. Alternitavely, if your birthday is extremely strong in one element, say fire for example, objects may be included from the earth element to temper and balance you.

There are characteristics associated with the twelve signs that give an inclusive envelope of identity to each of the astrological months and all the information contained in the following pages to what you find under your birthdate, you will discover more about your individual place in the universe.

Introduction

Each individual life and the greater cosmic whole in which we live are intimately related. Every object in our universe is also part of that rhythmic, cosmic whole. We are all made of the same Stuff, and each individual object we encounter or create on earth contains ingredients from that original universal source. The way these objects and the ingredients of our existence in the universe -- the "things" that surround us -- are mixed and matched in our environment can create great beauty and joy in our lives, or great dissonance and displeasure. It's really up to you.

Using the best of the ancient psychic and metaphysical tools at our disposal, we can know a tremendous amount about the power of things as they relate to us as individuals. If having some amount of control over these things -- specifically, what they are and where they are in the physical context of our lives -- can help turn the tides for us from dissonance to beauty and displeasure to joy, then shouldn't we do it?

The objects we surround ourselves with, if chosen to resonate with our particular planets, numbers, and stars, can enhance our lives and give us greater spiritual harmony. When a person surrounds himself or herself with objects, colors, minerals, or shapes that "speak" to him, it can bring a feeling of ease and comfort, even confidence. Ease and comfort in turn create a positive outlook, and a positive outlook naturally increases the joy of living and furthers creative solutions to everyday problems.

This book provides three distinct lenses through which we may experience our sense of individual union with the material world around us. The mysterious and beautiful sciences of astrology, numerology, and the kabbala bring the vastness of our universe into our individual awareness. They are like three windows looking at the same point in the universe -- your birth date -- but each from a unique perspective. Study your numbers and birth date and those of your loved ones and look around you -- your eyes will widen and your hearts will open to the wonder of the simple, powerful associations before you. These associations -- colors, shapes, textures, images, herbs, essences, sounds, planets, and more -- provide insight and inspiration to surround ourselves with the material objects favorable to our spiritual harmony. Over time, it will become natural to seek to use the power of everyday things to psychically enhance our existence here on earth.

Astrology, numerology, and kabbala are all abstract systems of thought that arose from man's basic urge to succeed and flourish in an uncertain world. This book translates knowledge from what are essentially spiritual disciplines into material, everyday objects such as colors, minerals, shapes, or sounds. We have applied these disciplines to help you determine those everyday things that most resonate with you. The correspondences are based on lore, tradition, planetary relationships, and numerological and symbolic values compiled over the centuries and updated to encompass what we see around us today.

For example, everybody needs a bed or place to sleep but every individual will signify a preference for the kind of bed or the materials that the bedstead is made from. Mars rules metals. It would be logical to make the connection that Aries, a sign ruled by Mars, would prefer a wrought iron or brass bed, rather than a cherry wood bed. If you are not an Aries but find that you love your antique brass bed frame, this is not to say you won't have a perfectly good night's sleep in your metal bed. This is to say, however, that sleeping in a bed made of a material with which you have a stronger association may optimize your experience. Don't go discarding all the objects you own that are not in perfect sync for you. But do be sensitive to the ways in which all of the objects that surround you affect you in the aggregate, and which could be working for you instead of against you or merely not at all. Be conscious of what you learn here as you work your way from day to day, editing your environment. You'll find you are not likely to do the overdramatic thing and, say, toss that brass bed out by the curb, but you may become more purposeful as all kinds of things come and go in your material world. And you certainly will become more purposeful as you share with others -- for instance, if you knew that mirrors would be a source of strength and inspiration to someone you love, wouldn't you be sure there were mirrors aplenty?

Being aware of the associations for your sign, your numerology, and kabbala will bring insight and the accompanying growth and knowledge that can change your life. What you take from here may be just the beginning of an exploration of how everyday things work to focus, enhance, and empower our lives. Happy searching!
