The Higgledy-Piggledy Pigeon was written by Don M. Winn. It is about a pigeon named Hank, who goes to his first day of flight school. He flew well when it came to taking off and landing. Although, he realized he had a problem when he had to go on his first flight alone. His task was to deliver a note and then come back to flight school. When he took off, he realized he did not know where he was going. He could not tell his left from his right. After trying to find his way by asking a few different animals for directions, he arrives back at flight school extremely late. The other students teased him for having no sense of direction. The teacher pulled him aside and informed him that it was alright he struggled with his first flight alone. She told him that like everyone else, he had some strong points and some weak points. She told him that with hard work, he could overcome those weaknesses and move forward and that is exactly what he did. The disability identified in this book is a learning disability. This book would be a great tool to use in the classroom. It would help students understand that every student learns differently. It would also allow them to realize that every student has strong points in learning and every student also has weak points in learning. This book would help explain that it is important to focus on those strong points. Students should not upset themselves or become overwhelmed because of the weaknesses they may have. The fact that the author pointed out Hank’s emotions after getting teased for getting lost would be useful in the classroom as well. It would show the students that teasing and making negative comments about someone else is not something they should do.
