Pirates and shipwrecks—if any topics would be guaranteed to quicken a YA's interest, it would be these. Author Konstam, onetime Arms Curator at the Tower of London and lately Chief Curator at a maritime museum in Key West, has put together a pair of oversized paperbacks, stuffed with photos and drawings. These two titles are remarkably well done. Readers of the piracy volume learn that it was not always a Caribbean thing; at one time or another, robbery at sea has plagued nearly every part of the world. Nor was it just a colorful 18th-century phenomenon. Konstam covers the entire history of piracy, from the miscreants that Caesar hanged in ancient times down to the pirates that infest corners of the Far East today. The book features two-page biographies of various freebooters, from the most well known, such as Blackbeard and Captain Kidd, down to obscure corsairs in other parts of the world. Feature pages about the various types of ships favored by sea brigands are especially choice, complete with excellent color drawings and plans. Indeed, all of the illustrations are well above par, and include color maps and drawings by notable artists like Howard Pyle. The shipwrecks volume is equally well done. Again brief sections are used, this time to depict the fates of individual ships or in some cases fleets. Interspersed are biographical sketches of prominent marine archaeologists and their recovery methods, as well as a few professional treasure hunters/plunderers. Besides the excellent illustrations, there are many modern color photographs of ancient wrecks and underwater expeditions. These attractive and colorful books are targeted at the secondary school level, but they are guaranteed tolure many an adult reader as well. Meet the Author

ANGUS KONSTAM has written over a dozen books on piracy, shipwrecks, and exploration for the Atlas series. He has made a lifelong study of maritime history and archaeology, and the history of early European development. He is a museum professional with experience in both Britain and the United States, and holds degrees in history and archaeology.

David Cordingly is the editor of A General History of the Robberies & Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates. He was on the staff of the National Maritime Museum, London, for twelve years, and organized such exhibitions as ‘The Art of the Van de Veldes’ and the acclaimed and highly successful ‘Pirates: Fact & Fiction’. Cordingly graduated from Oxford University, where he read modern history, and received his doctorate from the University of Sussex.

    I needed to know more about pirates.

    My grandson talks about pirates a lot and of course loves the Disney movies with Johnny Depp. I felt I needed to know more about the real pirates and Mr. Konstam's book gives me a good history and overview. It is very informative and the color pictures and timelines keep it lively.

    This Book will give you the FACTS about PIRATES!

    This is a wonderful historical book about piracy throughout the ages. It has gorgeous photos, and is a wonderful factual book about pirates. Did you know there were pirates in biblical days as well as today? And the pirates of different eras and locations were all different and interesting. I recommend this book for everyone.

    A good overview of the history of piracy

    Angus Konstam give us a good overview of the history of piracy, from the days of the Babylonian and Greek expansion to modern-day guerillas in speedboats armed with AK-47 assault rifles plying the south China Sea. There is a particular focus on the 'Golden Age' of piracy, the 16th and 17th centuries when pirates preyed on gold-laden Spanish galleons in the Main and Indian silk vessels on the trade routes to Europe. All of the famous pirates are here. Each chapter is printed on glossy paper with clean typeface and plenty of illustrations to express the mood of the book. Easy to read and very entertaining, this book doesn't have the depth of more scholastically-oriented books but it does provide a good history that most people can understand.
