Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Jennifer Rosenstein
The Music Library aims to introduce young readers to a general history of popular, major forms of music including hip-hop, rock, and pop. These books present a good overview of the development of these styles from their early origins to the present. The History Of Rap And Hip-Hop begins with the genre’s origins in the Bronx in the 1970s and follows the evolution of hip-hop from a little-known urban phenomenon to the global powerhouse it is today. Both books also cover the business of music, showing how technologies such as radio, LPs, cassette tapes, music videos, and the Internet have changed popular music. The writing style is fairly clear and straightforward, and the authors do their best to navigate the tricky challenge of describing musical styles in words. More photographs would help to bring the text to life. There is a recommended listening list at the back of each book. This series is likely to be useful to students who want to write a report on their favorite genre or artist, and may be interesting to young people unfamiliar with the history of popular music. Teens are unlikely to pick up these books for casual reading. Purchase this series for libraries where there is a strong interest in music. (The Music Library) Ages 11 to 15.
