Gibbon offers an explanation for why the Roman Empire fell, a task made difficult by a lack of comprehensive written sources, though he was not the only historian to tackle the subject. Most of his ideas are directly taken from what few relevant records were available: those of the Roman moralists of the 4th and 5th centuries.

These books are rife with spelling errors and the editor's notes are mixed into the actual writing, causing confusion. The cover is not well done and the books I ended up with were warped and unattractive. Upon further investigation I found that the publisher has put out other books that were not edited correctly. Wilder Publications should not be a company supported by Barnes and Noble. Also the warning on the title page of the book being a product of it's time is insulting. People reading these books obviously know it was written in the 18th century about happenings over thousand years old. I will be looking elsewhere to find a set of Gibbon's work that meets my bookshelf's standards.
