Overview

This four-volume, deluxe pocket boxed set contains J.R.R. Tolkien's epic masterworks The Hobbit and the three volumes of The Lord of the Rings (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King). Each book features a leatherette cover with stamped title and all  four books are held in a leatherette bound box with gold foil stamping. Shrinkwrapped.

In The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins is whisked away from his comfortable, unambitious life in Hobbiton by the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves. He finds himself caught up in a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon.

The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo Baggins and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the dwarf; Legolas the elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider. J.R.R. Tolkien's three volume masterpiece is at once a classic myth and a modern fairy tale—a story of high and heroic adventure set in the unforgettable landscape of Middle-earth.

I saw this as I was wandering around Barnes and Noble and passed it up since I already owned the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and two copies of the hobbit (leather and hardcover 7th anniversary). But got pondering it and wishing I had bought it. So I started researching it and getting reviews and descriptions. I decided to go ahead and make the purchase and am I glad, that I ever did. I am in awe is this collection of deluxe Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogy set. Seeing as I already owned the hobbit, I knew that there were illustrations in that and hoping that there would be in the trilogy sections (artwork) not the usual couple of pics that we know of from the regular version. But there weren't. I was a little bummed by that, but oh well. I really do love this set and would recommend it big time. The leather feels nice and its nice not having to hold such a clunky book in my hands. The font is small but that doesn't take away from the value and quality of this set. If you are debating on getting this, please don't hesitate at all. By all mean, go for it, you deserve it. So stop wandering around because when in the Tolkien section of the bookstore, "Not all who wander are lost."

This edition of the 4 books contain everything that the LOTR enthusiast could want. The drawback comes from the size of print. It is very small and it seems to vary in some places to a somewhat smaller size! Not interesting. Nice to have but hard to read. -Huon OTH-

I honestly did not purchase this from Barnes & Nobles, I stumbled upon it at Target and it was the last one. I couldn't help myself, the books are amazing quality and "Hobbit" sized I would say. Its compact size is very useful, I read them on the bus or during breaks from class. Better than dragging around a big clunky book. This book set is certainly a collectible as well. After switching to reading with a NOOK tablet, I only buy books that I truly love and wish to add to my collection, and this book set certainly looks charming on my bookcase. Out of curiosity I searched for this particular set all over the internet, didn't find it in Amazon, or any other site, except B&N. Which proves once again how immaculate their availability is. I love B&N, and I love this book set. Perfect gift for any J.R.R. TOLKIEN fanatic.

These are awesome! The edition combines all of the author's original intentions for the books and omits the plethora of changes that have been made by publishers over time. The only downside is that the text gets a little small on the Rings books (however not in the Hobbit).

I bought this as a gift & the recipient loved it, as did I, until we realized the 2nd book was bound UPSIDE DOWN?! Is this a quirk & deliberate for some reason for this set or is it simply a production error? Would it make it more collectable? Torn between keeping it or requesting a new one?

Excellent format for the series. My only complaint is no book marker ribbon to save your place and the text isn't horribly tiny but it is small. The leatherette covers are soft and supple and feel comfortable. This series is the unabridged version and since it's from Houghton-Mifflin it's not based off the movies or a part of that line/variance it is a reprint of the original trilogy and original Hobbit unabridged versions. It includes the Prefaces, and context on the editing done in the earlier works. The Return of the King contains the Appendices and such, there are a few nicely illustrated maps sprinkled in as well.  It is small text but it's not horrible if you are planning to read this on a plane, lying in bed or when you have a few quick minutes it works perfectly well for that. It might not be ideal for a sit down and read for hours session, but I prefer reading books this way.  It stashes easily in most any pocket, fits nice in my back jean pocket or inside a coat pocket or an outer pocket on a computer bag. The width of the spine is between a penny/nickel so it's fairly slim as well.  Overall an excellent set and a great buy for the casual reader and heavy abuser who needs a good mobile copy of their favorite LOTR books.

Love this edition of a classic series! Beautiful soft covers, very light book and complete with all maps, illustrations, and appendices. The only thing some people might not like is the smallish font, but this allowed the book to be lighter and better for my bedtime reading.

Even though the size is posted and it's clearly advertised as "pocket sized", I was somehow surprised at how small the volumes in this set are. The quality of the binding is lovely, and they are still quite readable and very nice indeed if you want a TRUE "pocket edition". But for regular reading I am going to purchase another set that's easier on the eyes.

I bought these as a gift for my best friend after he saw I had a similar set of the Lord of the rings. This was a perfect gift because it also included the Hobbit and the beautiful bindings and case. They are a perfect addition to any fantasy book lovers collection.

Like the other reviewer, I stumbled onto this elsewhere and bought it immediately- for more than Barnes & Noble is selling it for I might add. (get it here!) I have all of the books years ago, and loved them, but what really spoke to me is the beautiful yet understated leatherette binding, quality paper, and beautiful print and layout of th etext with these books. Beautiful! An aesthetic that really, really spoke to me. Is the style of cover and printing common? I would love to buy more of some of my favorite novels in this style.
