I read some fiction though not a lot. I usually have trouble becoming engrossed enough in the story to continue. Hence, I don't stick with it, and many books are started but few finished. This book is different. I read two-thirds of it in one sitting, something I have not done in many years (I think the last time was reading John Updike). I stayed up through the night reading this. As the cliche goes, I could not put it down. But this is not a cliche. The book really is engrossing. But it is engrossing in a weird (and good) way. In an abstract way, what happens in the plot is not believable. But it doesn't matter! Even though I knew the events were fantastic, it did not affect my "suspension of disbelief" one iota. The human story here, I guess, is really compelling. The ending is satisfying though I can't explain why. It's a road story, and a chase story, kind of a love story, and a book that is deeper than I think I understand. But most of all, it's a great read, and a book that has convinced me for the first time in a long time that a story can be disturbing, fun, and provocative all at once. More Powell, please!
