Overview

An authoritative and humorous look at Hollywood's ever-changing take on love, romance, and marriage over the decades

From steamy silent classics like A Fool There Was to romantic musicals like Grease to epic schmaltz-fests like Titanic, Hollywood historian and bestselling author James Robert Parish provides a very personal (but quite factual) run-down on how the Hollywood dream factory has portrayed love, marriage, and divorce on the big screen. The Hollywood Book of Love reveals in an entertaining fashion how the attitudes and standards the audience absorbs from the movies influence their expectations in real-life relationships.

Writing with his trademark dry wit and rich knowledge of American movie history, Parish provides perceptive and amusing takes on 200 feature films and offers tantalizing sidebar factoids on everybody from Liz, Bette, and Bogie, to Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, and Nicole Kidman.

    Falling In Love With Love

Quick: what's the meaning of life? If you answered 'love,' THE HOLLYWOOD BOOK OF LOVE is for you. THE HOLLYWOOD BOOK OF LOVE explains why the most classic Hollywood stories are love stories. More importantly, no matter how Hollywood love stories have changed over time, Parish shows us why audiences never tire of them. Romance, sex, marraige, affairs, divorce, lust........the author covers the many aspects of love as fictionalized by the silver screen. Selected entries in THE HOLLYWOOD BOOK OF LOVE include factoids and personal viewpoints about each film, making it as fun as it is informative.

    Enjoyable, Compulsive Read

Parish has written dozens of books on American film, and his knowledge is vast. This book makes shrewd use of that knowledge, but lightens it with delightful flights of humor. This makes for a enjoyable, compulsive read. The background is there, but it's not delivered in a stuffy or academic way. For example, in his section on Love Story, Parish writes: 'As you sniffle through this feature, bear in mind that these characters give shallowness new meaning. For example, our clean-cut hero asks over the soundtrack mourningfully, 'What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died?' His brilliant reply includes that she was beautiful (certainly a matter of personal taste) and that 'she loved Mozart and Bach...and the Beatles.' That's the best he can come up with? Oh, brother!'

    Fast, fun and fact-filled

Author Parish never disappoints and his latest book is no exception. In it, he has collected stories old and new, to give an entertaining overview of love among the stars. It is a book that you can dive into or savor section by section. As his incredible bibliography proves, Parish is the number one writer on films in America today. He always does incredible research but provides an entertaining time for the reader. This is great Summer reading!

    Love and Romance

Long Live Love and Romance! Mr. Parish's book, The Hollywood Book of Love, is certainly a gift for any film buff or movie-goer who has found that love and romance on the silver screen can warm and touch our hearts. He has captured the spirit of the films; the format is imaginative and creative. Please let there be a Hollywood Book of

    The Book on Love

Jim Parish does it again. This book is not only informative, it is highly entertaining--a great read! The stories about past Hollywood affairs, divorces, scandals, etc. remind us that things haven't changed all that much in the world. I especially enjoyed the factoids in the sidebars. And the top-notch photos. Perfect for any film fan--or anyone else, for that matter.

A fun look at Hollywood love past and present

Combining well-researched and written Hollywood anecdotes with insightful commentary, James Robert Parish brings these classic and not so classic movies to real and reel life in this entertaining book. His work made me want to see the classics he talked about. Highly recommended for the movie buff and novice alike.

    In Love with Love

Cool photographs, a wide range of new and old movies, topped by James Robert Parish's witty and concise prose: that's the Hollywood Book of Love. True enough, love in real life doesn't quite match love at the movies. But Parish's look at on-screen love leaves nothing to be desired. Romance, passion, sex. . . It's all there!

    Love Is All You Need

James Robert Parish¿s The Hollywood Book of Love is a many-splendored look at the movie industry¿s romance with the love story. Always informative, it has the added pleasure of being at turns witty, ironic and irreverent. Becoming, in the process, one of the authoritative works on the subject. A real pleasure.

    Fun Book of Hollywood Lore

James Parish has done it again. This irreverant look at what Hollywood has treated love, relationships, marriage and all related topics is entertaining, but also it reminds us what we see in films of ourselves and what films have done to help us define our ideas of love and relationships. Definitely recommended.

    it's love at first read!

Parish has taken yet again a filmic subject and created a definitive work...This is also an ideal present for loved ones.

    Studying the Book of Love

This is a lighthearted look at how we have learned about love from the movies. Using various categories such as Femme Fatates, Love Affairs to Remember, Walking Down the Aisle, Mr. Parish presents movies from early years to the present to show how our views of love have been shaped by the movies we see. But beware, as he shows us, life often doesn't always equal art; rolling around in the sand like From Here to Eternity can leave you with a suit full of sand. The book also has fun sidebars, that often show that the stars of the movies' lives often didn't reflect the romantics they played.
