Editorial Reviews

Sunday Seattle Times
The Home Design Handbook is an extraordinarily useful workbook for anyone planning a remodel or new construction project.
Washington DC Times
“The Home Design Handbook” is essentially a checklist of questions to ask before buying, building or remodeling, with space for writing down your answers. It deals with personal feelings (Do you prefer living spaces that flow together or are separate? Which rooms in your previous homes did you enjoy the most and why?), and practical decisions (how to assess a building site for privacy, utilities and good drainage, where to put the kitchen).
Library Journal
The Myrvangs, owners of a Seattle architecture firm, have created a book that will help novices navigate the area of home design. Design is important to anyone building, buying, or renovating a house since a home is typically one's largest investment, and once it is built one must live in it. Readers are given a series of questions which are designed to help sort through the tremendous amount of detail involved. Checklists of items that typically need consideration in every home, both interior and exterior, are covered. This is not an essential purchase, but is recommended for public libraries with active building and renovation collections.-- Jonathan Hershey, Akron-Summit Cty. P.L., Ohio
Booknews
A workbook with notes of caution that will enable homeowners to incorporate practical, emotional, and aesthetic considerations in the design of homes--new or remodeled. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Read an Excerpt

Whether you are remodeling a room, buying a home, or building a new home from scratch, The Home Design Handbook will help you create the home of your dreams. If you intend to remodel only one room or area, complete Chapters 1, 3, 4, 16 and particularly Chapter 5 (“For the Remodeler”). Then go directly to the chapter that pertains to your particular project, such as kitchens. However, if you are not certain about the extent of your remodeling needs or if you are planning to buy an existing home or specific house plan, then work through the entire book as if you were building a new home. Your responses to the questions will help you decide which features fit your needs and suit your family’s lifestyle.

Designing and building a home involves an enormous number of decisions. This book will help clarify the needs of everyone in the household. If this is a shared family project, it makes sense to resolve conflicts before detailed plans are drawn. Every hour spent in planning could well save you three hours at the construction site. After everyone has responded to the exercises in this book, sort through your differences to decide upon some satisfying compromises before you meet with your design professional. Trade-offs are inevitable. It is often necessary to sacrifice one idea to accommodate another—or to meet your budget.

Some design considerations are standard; we have included a “Checklist” section, where needed, for these key items. Make sure your design professional is aware of every checklist, because it is not unusual for simple considerations to be overlooked. The checklist appears before each section requiring your individual responses, so you will not need to duplicate this information in your responses. Some chapters offer narratives: explanations of important, yet often unfamiliar, home design information.

Enjoy the handbook! Here is the opportunity to make your home uniquely suited to your lifestyle, tastes, and budget.
