Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Christensen
This picture book describes the construction and purpose of the Hoover Dam, which was built in the 1930s. Black-and-white photographs of the dam's construction and color pictures of the dam as it is today document the immense size of the structure and the incredible undertaking of the designers and builders. The author emphasizes the many benefits of the dam, from supplying water to homes and farms to generating large amounts of electricity. Unfortunately, no information is given about the environmental costs, making this a somewhat uneven account. New readers will appreciate the large type and the simple text. Colored textboxes add interesting tidbits of information and provide captions to the many photographs. Special features include a map showing the dam's location between Nevada and Arizona, a page of fun facts, a glossary, an index, and a bibliography that includes information about both print and Internet sources. In general, this book would be a good source for students who are writing reports. Reviewer: Heather Christensen

Gr 2-4–These attractive books use high-quality photos, illustrations, maps, and diagrams to take students to some of America's most famous landmarks, providing information about the history, construction, and significance of each one. Two or three sentences per page are overlaid on full-page, captioned images. The texts conclude with a “Fun Facts” page. Readers will enjoy learning about our famous sites and the challenges of building and maintaining large structures, making the series a good choice.
