Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Marissa Wolf
The Huaca is a well-plotted mystery that will keep readers captivated from the first sentence. Ellie's life changed forever one year ago when her mother was murdered. The case has yet to be solved. To make matters worse, Elli and her best friend are drifting apart. While trying to figure out where in high school she belongs, Ellie befriends Gabe, an outcast with a mysterious reputation. Gabe, who is of Incan ancestry, tells Ellie that he has an ancient Incan artifact in his possession, an object that will allow its user to travel to hanan pacha, the afterworld. Gabe and Ellie use the artifact to track down her mother's murderer. Ellie's world is shattered once more when she sees, through her mother's memories, her loving father strangling her mother. The author builds a very strong relationship between Ellie and her father, making the reveal of her mother's killer all the more surprising. Teens will be able to identify with Ellie and her best friend moving in different directions, as often happens at the end of high school. While Ellie understands that high school is not everything and has a bright future to look forward to, her friend's goals are different-to go to college in order to find a husband who will provide for her. The integration of Incan mythology may inspire further exploration of the topic. Talk this book up to your mystery lovers and to teens who enjoy reading about the challenges of maintaining a best friend in a changing environment. Reviewer: Marissa Wolf
