Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Steven K. Hamick, BIS, RCP, RRT (William Beaumont Hospitals)
Description: This introductory textbook encompassing anatomy, physiology, and introductory pathology is an update of the fifth edition published in 2009.
Purpose: The authors intend it for use in introductory courses about the human body for various health professions. Given the importance of anatomy, physiology, and pathology in these courses, the authors have met their stated objectives.
Audience: It is written specifically for future health professionals who are just beginning their exploration of the human organism. However, because it is so easy to read, anyone interested in the structure and function of the human body would find it interesting.
Features: "The book has two conceptual themes (complementarity of normal structure and function, and homeostasis) as well as two unifying pedagogical themes (the language of science and a multisensory approach to learning). The 25 chapters present the core material of anatomy, physiology, and pathology most important for introductory students. Basic human biology is presented in chapters 1-6 and specialized topics in the remaining chapters, with the last chapter devoted to immunology. Each chapter begins with an outline followed by objectives with hints. A brief introduction is followed by a list of key terms and their pronunciations, which are also found with their definitions back at the glossary. The book also features boxed sidebars highlighting health and well-being, clinical applications, science applications, and research, issues, and trends. Each chapter ends with an outline summary, study tips, and an active learning section with review questions, a critical thinking section, a chapter test, and case studies. The book ends with three appendixes containing examples of pathological conditions, medical terminology, hints for learning and using medical terms, clinical and laboratory values, conversion factors, and, finally a glossary and index. These are among the numerous tools that readers will find useful."
Assessment: This is an outstanding book and would be an excellent resource in any public or college/university library.
