Description: The third edition of this concise text teaches neuroanatomy while combining neurobiology, neurophysiology, and neurological cases to present the brain in excellent detail in an easy-to-follow format. The author provides excellent textual description, accompanied by schematics, CT scans, MRIs, micrographs, and gross sections. This provides the student with excellent visualization of the human brain.
Purpose: The purpose is to teach health professional students about the anatomy and some physiology of the human brain. The author accomplishes this task with ease, with great assistance from the clear illustrations.
Audience: The book is written at a high level for health professional students. The text is very concise, yet it allows students to integrate the material.
Features: One of the strong points is the integration of textual information with elaborate illustrations. The adequate number of illustrations helps the student visualize the human brain and integrate the physiological functions. Another feature is the availability of a study guide that reviews key concepts, with excellent schematics to provide simpler explanation when necessary. The study guide also asks and explains questions of clinical significance. An additional feature is the small atlas covering the entire CNS. This atlas is well referenced in the text, providing increased visualization to the student. The table of contents provides an outline of each chapter, and the index is elaborate.
Assessment: This is an excellent text for the learning and understanding of the complexities of the human brain in anatomy and some physiology. There is good coordination among histology, gross anatomy, and physiology, allowing the student to gain a concise understanding of the function of the brain. Use of this text and the study guide would provide excellent instruction of neuroanatomy. Improvement in the quality and quantity of illustrations from the second edition has strengthened this edition.
