Overview

"There are two kinds of people in this world: the ones who don't cook out of and have NEVER cooked out of THE I HATE TO COOK BOOK, and the other kind...The I HATE TO COOK people consist mainly of those who find other things more interesting and less fattening, and so they do it as seldom as possible. Today there is an Annual Culinary Olympics, with hundreds of cooks from many countries ardently competing. But we who hate to cook have had our own Olympics for years, seeing who can get out of the kitchen the fastest and stay out the longest."

- Peg Bracken

Philosopher's Chowder. Skinny Meatloaf. Fat Man's Shrimp. Immediate Fudge Cake. These are just a few of the beloved recipes from Peg Bracken's classic I HATE TO COOK BOOK. Written in a time when women were expected to have full, delicious meals on the table for their families every night, Peg Bracken offered women who didn't revel in this obligation an alternative: quick, simple meals that took minimal effort but would still satisfy.

50 years later, times have certainly changed - but the appeal of THE I HATE TO COOK BOOK hasn't.

This book is for everyone, men and women alike, who wants to get from cooking hour to cocktail hour in as little time as possible.

Editorial Reviews

Christopher Schoppa
…this book's strident title belies both its usefulness and its popularity…What's truly wonderful is Bracken's droll delivery and the more than 200 recipes that run the gamut from appetizers to desserts.

These are just a few of the beloved recipes from Peg Bracken's classic, I Hate to Cook Book. Written in a time when women were expected to have a full, delicious meals on the table for their families every night, the book offered women who didn't revel in this obligation an alternative: quick, simple meals that took minimal effort but would still satisfy. Fifty years later, times have certainly changed - but the appeal of The I Hate To Cook Book hasn't. Updated and revised to fit the tastes of today, this new edition includes a forward by Peg's daughter, Jo and recipe updates for a whole new generation of women who hate to cook (and those who like it too)! This book is for everyone, men and women alike, who want to get from the cooking hour to the cocktail hour in as little time as possible. (excerpt from back cover). My Review: Some of the recipes in this cook book are so - well, so simple - that they'd have any Cordon Bleu chef pounding his head with his omelete pan. The thing about these recipes is this: they're here! You don't have to ferret them out of your huge, jolly encyclopedia cook book. And they'll get you through the month in just one chapter alone! The points that are special about them are these: 1. They all taste good. 2. They are all easy to make. 3. Each has been approved by representative women who hate to cook. 4. Some do two jobs. They involved either meat, fish or chicken plus a vegetable, so all you need is bread to make a meal. 5. Many can be made ahead. 6. Most of them are quick to fix. Here's one classic example: Sweep Steak Makes 4-6 Servings (So called because a couple of seasons ago, this recipe swept the country). 2-3 pound round steak or pot roast both 1 - ounce packets in the package of onion-soup mix. Put the meat on a sheet of aluminum foil big enough to wrap it in. Sprinkle the onion-soup mix on top of it, fold the foil, airtight, around it, put it in a baking pan, and bake it at 300 degrees for three hours or 200 degrees for 9 hours, it really doesn't matter. You can open it up, if you like, an hour or so before it's done and surround it with potatoes and carrots. I absolutely love this book over my standard Betty Crocker classic cookbook, because as you can see from the example above, it's easy and tastes wonderful as if you have slaved away at a hot stove all day long. The book contains recipes for leftovers, vegetables, salads and dressings, potatoes, rice, potluck suppers, a girls' luncheon ideas, desserts, little kid parties, and last minute ideas for dinner. It even provides a what to do section when your meal doesn't turn out exactly as planned. Can I say anymore? I could but I really have to recommend this book to anyone who loves or hates to cook. This book comes in Hard Cover and eBook formats. I received The I Hate To Cook Book by Peg and Jo Bracken, compliments of Hachette Book Groups in return for my honest review. To sweeten the pot, they are offering, three lucky followers of mine the opportunity to win a copy, simply by leaving me a comment telling me what your interest would be in learning to cook.

That's what the negative reviewer meant by "filler." Readers who know who she is and what she does will not be disappointed.

This is a great addition to any library. It's not only an extremely funny book, it's full of recopies that are easy and delicious, and often fast as well. But it's more than just a cookbook, for beginners or the short of time cooks. IT's going to make you laugh while you are adding some fast and simple to make but great to eat favorites to your standard meals.

I probably have several hundred cookbooks but the only ones I have read cover to cover are Peg Bracken's. I have her original cookbooks and they are completely dog eared. Her recipes are simple and delicious but more than that she is hysterically funny! Her "when in doubt throw it out", or "Company is coming and your back is to the wall" and Hoot and Holler Whiskey cake are just a few items that show her sense of humor. My mother gave me her first book when I was a young bride in the early 70's and I fell in love with Peg. I still pull her book out and use it. I will definitely buy this new book even though I have the old ones.

I read heart2heart's review and couldn't agree more. This book is wonderful for all. I bought the book and have now ordered another as a gift. Only wish I had the first one to make sure I haven't missed anything from Ms. Bracken.

I bought the original in the 60, when I was a teenager and just starting to cook for my brother and newly single father. I already loved Peg Bracken as a humorist, and her cookbook was invaluable to me. Wish I still had the original, but I love having this revised version and have given several copies as gifts to friends.

Replaced my original copy from the sixties! Some of the same recipes I've used for almost 50 years. Would make a great gift to a working person.

THE ORIGINAL MADE ME LAUGH AT MYSELF AND NOD OH SO KNOWINGLY. THIS UPDATED VERSION IS WONDERFUL FOR APPREHENSIVE COOKS AND BAKERS. I ACTUALLY FLUNKED HOME ECONOMICS AND 'FORGOT' TO TELL MY HUSBAND UNTIL AFTER WE SAID OUR VOWS!THE TRUTH RESULTED IN OUR FIRST THANKSGIVING DINNER-EVERYTHING THAT WAS TO BE HOT WAS COLD AND THE COLD SALAD WAS MUCH TOO WARM. THEN I BURNED BOOTOMS OF THE ROLLS WHEN RECALLED NEAR END OF THE DINNER. BY THE WAY, MY IN-LAWS AND PARENTS WERE OUR GUESTS!PEG BRACKEN IS MY DELIGHTFUL FRIEND IN THE KICHEN ALWAYS!BY THE WAY ALL OF US SURVIVED WITHOUT FOOD POISONING!
