Divorcee Jenny Lake suspects the new ice cream man, Nick Barnett, is selling more than bompops off his truck. The neighbors think Nick is dealing drugs.

Nick fears Jenny is more than the frazzled mom of two she portrays, as all evidence makes her suspect number one in his check-kiting case.

Of course, Nick also knows a cop should never fall in love with his suspect. And a man who can't tolerate kids shouldn't love a woman who wants a houseful. But somehow he keeps forgetting as he does everything possible to prove the evidence wrong.

I had no idea that Eileen Dreyer, an author I have enjoyed reading in the past, also writes under the name of Kathleen Korbel. What a happy surprise to be offered a romance written by her in 1988! Now, when reading a book from decades before it is wise to remember that life and romances were different then and books written will reflect that. That said…I thoroughly enjoyed this book :) The story took me back to a simpler time when doors were often left unlocked, women were more often stay at home mom’s and ice cream trucks visited neighborhoods where I lived. Jenny Lake is scraping to make ends meet for herself and her two young children. Her wealthy ex-husband is a deadbeat dad living the highlife with his new wife and delinquent in child support payments. Into Jenny’s life comes The Ice Cream Man, Nick. Nick is fantasy material for Jenny but a hot questionably drug dealing conversational item among the women of Jenny’s neighborhood. Nick is not what he appears to be on the surface…nope…not at all. As the story progresses Nick and Jenny get to know and begin to fall for one another. They have ups and downs and interesting things happen that I found thoroughly enjoyable. 4.5 stars! Single, divorced mother of two kids meets Nick, the ice cream man, and a romance begins. This is set in 1988, and the story still works today. There are some cool characters in this story. Nick Barnett is a mystery man, assumed to be a drug dealer by the neighborhood women. Jenny is 'volunteered' to go undercover to bust him. Her daughter, Emma, is a treat. Nosy neighbors, suspicious mail activity, and Jenny can't help falling for sexy Nick. And then there are a couple of twists that made it even better. I enjoyed how well this was written and how easily I was absorbed in it. The book cover is a bit goofy, but I chose it because of the blurb. I'm glad that I did. Her marriage ended in divorce and dashed her dreams. This schoolteacher was relatable, and parts of the story felt realistic. I liked her and her big test for Nick. The mystery was a bit on the side and not the main focus. It was mainly the reason they got together. I figured one part, but was surprised by the other. Worth reading if you're looking for a romance with a cozy mystery, a hot guy, an adorable daughter, and a single mother that you can't help but root for. I thought this was a cute book, a fun love story. It's a great book to read when you just want to kick back & let all your cares fade away for a couple of hours. There are no crazy twists or turns but the writing is engaging & the characters are sassy. Enjoyable read. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
