This book is not for the average reader since it often looks at historical events from three points of view and makes the reader 'construct' her/his own story based on which one of the story lines is accepted. It is an intellectual challenge, particularly for those who are not familiar with Arenas work. The active participation of the reader is a requirement for understanding and enjoying this book. The basic premise of the book is that Servando Teresa de Mier, the Mexican patriot, is persecuted for his beliefs throughout his life, so he is forced to flee. The similarity between the subject's life and the author's is one of the reasons that Arenas cites in the introduction as having attracted him to the historical figure. Although it is not necessary, it would be helpful to know a bit about the author's life (Before Night Falls).
