Overview

Stephen Hawking, the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, is regarded as one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Einstein. This volume collects two of his landmark books of scientific writing, abundantly illustrated in full color.

The Illustrated A Brief History of Time is a classic study of cosmology featuring chapters on black holes, wormholes, time travel, the expanding universe, the uncertainty principle, Einstein's theories of relativity, elementary particles, and the origin and fate of the universe. Enhanced with satellite images and photographs made possible by the Hubble Space Telescope, this book provides the fascinating story of the ongoing search for the secrets at the heart of space and time.

The Universe in a Nutshell offers a cutting-edge look at theoretical physics, and the search for the elusive "Theory of Everything" that lies at the heart of the cosmos. In his accessible and often playful style, Hawking guides the readers through such topics as supergravity, supersymmetry, quantum theory, M-theory, holography, and duality.

The Illustrated a Brief History of Time/The Universe in a Nutshell is one of Barnes & Noble's Collectible Editions classics. This is a truly beautiful edition. A great read as well as a great collectable. The kind of book you keep forever and share with your children when they're old enough.

As someone who really enjoys natural laws, physics, theories and everything from black holes to time travel, this book shows really well into the Stephen Hawking's ideas. The illustration make it that much better with many mind-stunning pictures and real life effect with arrows pointing to how everything works. I recommend getting it if you are at all interested in theoretical thinking.

I've been collecting the Leatherbound Classics series for a while now, and I loved everything they've produced. This copy, however, is an odd size. I've purchased two others that have odd sizes compared to the rest of the collection: "The Illustrated Children's Bible" and "The Birds of America." Each of these books have unique dimensions from each other and the rest of the collection. Kind of frustrating for someone who wants a nice uniform bookshelf, but there's always a way to make it work. Overall this book feels much like a text book. Well made, and very attractive—odd dimensions and all.
