Chatper 1: Illustrator Basics

This chapter is packed with tips and techniques chosen to help you use Adobe Illustrator with optimal ease and efficiency. Whether you're a veteran of Illustrator or a relative newcomer, you're likely to find information here that will greatly increase your productivity and help you get up to speed on the latest features. Remember, this chapter is an addendum to, not a replacement for, Adobe Illustrator's User Guide.

Computer & System Requirements

Creating artwork on the computer is as rewarding as it is challenging. Computer art tools, including Adobe Illustrator, have seen great improvements in the past few years. Unfortunately, one of the sad facts about demands for faster and more powerful software is that the more powerful upgrades might not run on older computers. For example, the minimum RAM requirement is now at least 64MB of RAM made available to run Illustrator. This is more than three times the RAM required in the last version of the program. For rasterizing in Illustrator, you'll probably need to allocate 90-I20MB. You'll also need more hard disk space than ever before: Illustrator files containing live blends, brushes, placed raster images, gradient meshes, live effects and transparency are quite large! If you want to work efficiently, you'll also need a video card or extra VRAM for 24-bit color support. Illustrator does not require a large monitor, but we strongly recommend using one. The best solution is two monitors. This allows you to keep your palettes on one monitor, while using the other monitor to create your artwork.

Setting Up Your Page New Document This version of Illustrator doesn't automatically open witha new document. To create a blank document, select New from the File menu. A dialog box opens in which you will select the document color space (CMYK or RGB) and the Artboard Size (the document dimensions). The default page size is 612 pts x 792 pts, which is equivalent to 8.5 x 11 inches. Illustrator will no longer allow you to create new art that uses both CMYK and RGB colors in the same document.

The Artboard

A box with a solid black outline defines the artboard dimensions and the final document size. The dotted line indicates the page margins, which represent the printable area of the current selected printer. Double-click the Hand tool to fit your image to the current window. Use View: Hide Page Tiling to hide the dotted lines. Use the Page tool to click-drag the dotted-line page parameters around the Artboard; only objects within the dotted line will print to your printer.

Document Setup

Once you have created your new document you should make a habit of opening the Document Setup dialog box (File: Document Setup). Here you change the size, orientation and view of the artboard. You also determine the output, rasterization and mesh resolution settings, as well as adjusting the print quality of a document containing transparency, (see the Transparency, Styles e'r Effects chapter).

To match the artboard to your current printer, make sure Use Page Setup is enabled (default is on) and choose from one of the pop-up presets, or set the size. This will switch your paper size to "Custom." The maximum size can be as large as 227" x 227".

Page Setup

Use Page Setup if you want to change the paper size and page orientation for the currently selected printer. Select your desired page size from the Paper Size pop-up menu, and choose portrait or landscape orientation. Only the paper sizes your target printer can support will display in the Paper Size pop-up...
