Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 2-4Intended as an introduction for younger readers, this book fails to communicate basic information or the broad sweep of American immigration. Arranged chronologically, the title devotes generally six illustration-filled pages to each period. A brief summary on the first page is followed by terse headlined paragraphs of information about who came, where they settled, and what they did. Some of the material is misleading or simply wrong: the Dutch may have been known for religious toleration, but Peter Stuyvesant hardly "welcomed" the first Jewish settlers in New Amsterdam; he wrote the Dutch West Indian Company requesting permission to expel them. Peregrine White, the first English child born in New England, was male, not female. The fact that the early English settlers gave the country its underlying customs, laws, and language is not pointed out; the changing composition and bulges in immigration at the turn of the century and after 1965 are not mentioned. Illustrations of average quality include photographs, paintings, and etchings.Diane S. Marton, Arlington County Library, VA
